Are You Seeking a Different Perspective to Explore Shanghai at Night?

As the sun dips below the horizon and the city lights start to glimmer, Shanghai unveils a new face - one that dazzles in the night. If you've wondered what this multifaceted city looks like after dark, then our 3-Hour Shanghai Night Tour Along the Huangpu River is perfect for you. Whether you're a fan of the city's historical allure or its modern dynamism, this night tour offers two unique perspectives: Puxi’s Historical Elegance or Pudong’s Modern Marvels.

There's no debate that there's no better way to experience it than at night along the Huangpu River. This majestic river is the lifeline of the city, dividing it into two contrasting worlds: the historically rich Puxi (West Bank) and the futuristic Pudong (East Bank).

Puxi’s Historical Elegance: Imagine a tapestry of historic buildings, each a relic of colonial influence, lit under the glow of warm, golden lights. The Bund on the Puxi side is like a visual museum, displaying the grandeur of a bygone era. Each building here tells a story, and the warm lighting makes it all seem like a page from a history book, beautifully coming to life.

Pudong’s Modern and Dazzling: Turn your eyes to the other side of the river, and you’ll feel as if you’ve been teleported into the future. Towering skyscrapers reach ambitiously into the night sky, glowing in a myriad of colors from their LED costumes. Buildings like the Oriental Pearl Tower, the Shanghai Tower, and the Shanghai World Financial Center serve as modern lighthouses, guiding the city into a new age.

Don't miss out on the chance to see Shanghai from a whole new perspective. Book your spot on our 3-Hour Shanghai Night Tour Along the Huangpu River and choose the face of Shanghai you wish to discover!

Day 1 Shanghai Huangpu River Night Tour | Puxi with Classic Lights or Pudong with Dazzling Lights

The Huangpu River is a major river that flows through the city of Shanghai, eventually emptying into the Yangtze River. The river effectively divides the city into two distinct regions: Puxi to the west and Pudong to the east. After dark, both sides of the Huangpu River offer contrasting views of the two shores.

Our Shanghai Huangpu River Night Tour lasts about 3-4 hours, and you have a choice between two routes. (1) Route Puxi (West Bank): This route focuses on the city's historical districts, including The Bund. The colonial-era architecture of The Bund bathed in the warm glow of classical lighting, offers a sense of time-travel back to the early 20th century. (2) Route Pudong (East Bank): This route focuses on the skylines in Lujiazui. Witness the towering skyscrapers basked in the neon glows, offering a sense of modernity and futurism.

Optional Puxi (West Bank) Night Tour (3-4 hours)
Elegant Evenings: A Nighttime Stroll Through The Bund

Note: Your guide will meet you at the assembly point.
Scenic Spots You will Pass:

Assembly Point→ Bund → Huangpu River Cruise → Nanjing Road → Xintiandi →Get back to your Hotel

Welcome briefing by your experienced guide, providing an overview of the night's itinerary and what to expect. Your first stop is the Bund (Waitan). Located on the bank of the Huangpu River and renowned as “An Exhibition of International Buildings”, the Bund is a collection of 52 buildings representing various international architectural styles. Since 1844 (Qing Dynasty), foreign banks, trading companies, clubs, and newspapers have gathered here, showcasing the former glory of the "Wall Street of the Far East" (远东华尔街). As night falls, The Bund takes on an ethereal glow, with buildings beautifully lit in a manner that accentuates their historic façades, offering offers a sense of time-travel back to the early 20th century.

After your walk, step onto the evening cruise along the Huangpu River for a visual feast that shows off both sides of Shanghai. On the Puxi side, you'll see The Bund, where beautiful, old buildings glow warmly under classic lighting. These historic structures tell the story of Shanghai's rich past. On the other side of the river is Pudong, where you'll find an entirely different scene. Here, modern skyscrapers like the Oriental Pearl Tower, the Shanghai Tower, and the Shanghai World Financial Center light up the night. They're covered in bright, colorful lights, showcasing the city's futuristic vibe.

Next, enjoy a walk from the Bund to Nanjing Road, one of the iconic attractions of Shanghai, known as the "Number One Commercial Street in China". It serves as a window to Shanghai's openness to the world and a paradise for shoppers from both domestic and international locations. Nanjing Road is the perfect place to experience century-old Chinese time-honored shops. As the evening unfolds, the street comes alive in a carnival of lights. Neon signs and giant LED screens flash with the glamour of luxury brands, and twinkling fairy lights adorn the trees, casting a soft glow on the facades of historical buildings.

Your last stop in Xintiandi. Xintiandi (新天地)is a bustling place that seamlessly blends Shikumen architecture (石库门) with modern urban fashion style. It offers a comprehensive introduction to the local Shikumen (stone-gate house) architecture, along with enticing dining and shopping options. This upscale entertainment and shopping complex is modeled on traditional “Nong Tang” (弄堂alleyway) homes and stands as the pioneering development in the city, demonstrating the commercial viability of preserving historical architecture.

Optional Pudong (East Bank) Night Tour (3-4 hours)

Your evening of exploring the futuristic heart of Shanghai kicks off with a briefing from your experienced guide, laying out the night's itinerary and what you can expect to see and do.

Your first destination is the Pudong New Area, a symbol of China's rapid modernization. This area is home to some of Shanghai's most iconic skyscrapers, including Oriental Pearl Tower, Jin Mao Tower, Shanghai World Financial Center and Shanghai Tower. The Pudong skyline is a spectacle of neon lights, laser shows, and towering skyscrapers. China in 14 Days: Great Wall, Xi’an, Chongqing, Avatar Mountains & Shanghai

We just got back from a 14-day (14 nights, 15 days) trip to China with my parents and my husband. From the moment we arrived in Beijing to the time we left Shanghai, everything was exceptionally well coordinated. The selection of hotels, guides, and drivers was consistently excellent throughout the entire trip.

Our advisor, Shirley, was attentive the entire time and made sure everything ran smoothly. If you’re visiting Chongqing, I highly recommend asking for Yudy as your guide, and in Shanghai, be sure to request Gaby—both are excellent guides, incredibly kind, and always made sure everything we needed was taken care of.

I highly recommend working with Asia Odyssey Travel if you’re planning a trip to China. It was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience that we will always remember.

29-Day China Tour with Asia Odyssey ★★★★★ (5/5 Stars)

Our almost 1 month-long journey through 12 Chinese cities has been nothing short of extraordinary – an experience that exceeded all expectations and left us already planning our return to explore more of this magnificent country.

We traveled across Beijing, Pingyao, Xi'an, Dali, Shangri-La, Chengdu, Zhangjiajie, Guilin, Yangshou, Hangzhou, Huangshan, and Shanghai, covering distances via 4 domestic flights and 6 high-speed trains (in both first and business class). Our accommodations included 15 stays at 4 to 5-star hotels, all perfectly located with spacious, comfortable rooms that made each stop feel like a home away from home.

The highlights were countless: breathtaking scenery that looked as if it had been lifted straight from a painting, remarkable architecture that told stories of millennia of history, rich cultural traditions that came alive at every turn, warm and welcoming people, and incredible food that delighted our palates in every region.

What truly set this trip apart was the exceptional service provided by our travel consultant, Shirley, from Asia Odyssey. She has taken substantial time and effort crafting a flawless itinerary that balanced exploration, comfort, and cultural immersion perfectly. There are also the team of local guides who made our journey unforgettable – each one was knowledgeable, friendly, patient, and went above and beyond to ensure we felt valued and well-cared for. From helping with payments when our digital wallets failed, to bargaining on our behalf, answering every question promptly, and ensuring we never felt lost or overwhelmed, their dedication was remarkable. A special thank you to Tracey (Beijing), Jonathan (Pingyao), Jenny (Xi'an), Selina (Dali), Sophia (Shangri-La) , Sumner (Chengdu), Shy (Zhangjiajie), Lizzie (Guilin/Yangshuo), Sloven (Hangzhou), Sophia 汪(Huangshan) and Mary (Shanghai) – you are the heart of this incredible company.

Our drivers were equally outstanding, always smiling, patient, and attentive to every detail – from opening doors to handling our luggage with care. Throughout the entire trip, we felt like VIPs, with every need anticipated and addressed.

We leave China with thousands of photos and even more precious memories, and we cannot recommend Asia Odyssey highly enough. This is how travel should be – seamless, enriching, and filled with genuine care and expertise. We’ll be back soon to discover even more of China’s wonders!

Customised Beijing, Chengde and Tianjin tour
We booked a customised 11-day 3 cities tour with Vicky in April 2024. Vicky's level and professionalism, patience, and understanding are highly appreciated as she listened to our requirements and planned a tour that exceeded our expectations and provided us with a lasting memory of our first China tour.
