Day 1 Shanghai City Tour | Yu Garden, Shanghai Tower, Nanjing Road & The Bund Walking

Today, discover the perfect contrast of Shanghai—from ancient Chinese gardens and historic streets to futuristic skyscrapers and the iconic Huangpu River skyline.

Explore Old Shanghai at Yu Garden

Start your day in Shanghai's Old Town with a visit to Yu Garden, a masterpiece of classical Chinese garden design dating back over 460 years to the Ming Dynasty. Stroll through its peaceful pavilions, rockeries, ponds, and winding paths while discovering traditional Jiangnan garden artistry.

Along the way, pass the famous Nine-Bend Bridge and Huxinting Tea House, where you can enjoy a beautiful view of the modern Lujiazui skyline rising behind the historic neighborhood. Your guide will share fascinating stories about the garden's architecture, hidden dragon decorations, and its connection to traditional Chinese culture.

Cross the Huangpu River & Experience Modern Shanghai

Take a local public ferry across the Huangpu River, traveling from historic Puxi to the futuristic Pudong financial district. This short river journey offers a unique perspective of Shanghai's transformation from an old trading port into a global metropolis.

Continue to Shanghai Tower, China's tallest building and one of the world's highest observation decks. Take the world's fastest elevators to the 118th-floor Top of Shanghai Observatory (546 meters) and enjoy breathtaking 360-degree panoramic views of the city, including the Bund, Huangpu River, and Lujiazui's iconic skyscrapers.

Walk from Nanjing Road to The Bund

End the day with a scenic city walk along Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street to The Bund, Shanghai's most iconic waterfront.

Experience the energy of China's most famous shopping street before stepping into the architectural world of 1930s Shanghai. Along the Bund, admire the impressive collection of historic buildings known as the "Museum of International Architecture", featuring styles from Gothic and Baroque to Art Deco.

Walk along the Huangpu River promenade and enjoy classic views of:

  • Shanghai Customs House Clock Tower
  • Peace Hotel
  • HSBC Building
  • Lujiazui skyscrapers across the river

Capture the unforgettable image of old and new Shanghai standing together—the perfect ending to your Shanghai exploration.

After the tour, return to your hotel.

Walking Route: Wukang Road → Xuhui Old House Art Center → Wukang Mansion → Madam Song's Former Residence → Little White House

Highlights include:

  • Wukang Road: One of Shanghai's most beautiful historic streets, lined with more than a dozen protected heritage buildings.
  • Wukang Mansion: A landmark 1924 building designed by famous architect László Hudec, showcasing Shanghai's early modern architectural style.
  • Madam Song's Former Residence: Visit the elegant villa once home to one of China's most influential historical figures.
  • Little White House: Explore this charming Baroque-style building, now home to the Shanghai Arts and Crafts Museum, featuring traditional crafts and artworks.

Option B: Shanghai Longtang & Shikumen Walking Tour (Approx. 4 Hours)

Theme: Discover Authentic Old Shanghai Neighborhood Life

Explore the traditional residential areas that reveal the everyday life of old Shanghai. Walk through Longtang (lane neighborhoods) and Shikumen houses, a unique architectural style combining Chinese courtyard living with Western influences.

Walking Route: Zhang Yuan Shikumen Complex → Jing'an Villa → Xintiandi Shikumen Area → Tianzifang

Highlights include:

  • Zhang Yuan Shikumen Complex: Shanghai's largest and most complete preserved Shikumen neighborhood, offering a glimpse into the city's residential history.
  • Jing'an Villa: A classic lane housing community representing Shanghai's unique urban lifestyle.
  • Xintiandi Shikumen Area: Explore beautifully restored Shikumen buildings and learn about Shanghai life in the 1920s and 1930s.
  • Tianzifang: Wander through narrow lanes filled with cafés, art studios, boutiques, and traditional shops, where old Shanghai meets modern creativity.

Experience the charm of Shanghai's hidden alleyways and see how generations of locals lived in these unique neighborhoods.

China in 14 Days: Great Wall, Xi’an, Chongqing, Avatar Mountains & Shanghai

We just got back from a 14-day (14 nights, 15 days) trip to China with my parents and my husband. From the moment we arrived in Beijing to the time we left Shanghai, everything was exceptionally well coordinated. The selection of hotels, guides, and drivers was consistently excellent throughout the entire trip.

Our advisor, Shirley, was attentive the entire time and made sure everything ran smoothly. If you’re visiting Chongqing, I highly recommend asking for Yudy as your guide, and in Shanghai, be sure to request Gaby—both are excellent guides, incredibly kind, and always made sure everything we needed was taken care of.

I highly recommend working with Asia Odyssey Travel if you’re planning a trip to China. It was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience that we will always remember.

29-Day China Tour with Asia Odyssey ★★★★★ (5/5 Stars)

Our almost 1 month-long journey through 12 Chinese cities has been nothing short of extraordinary – an experience that exceeded all expectations and left us already planning our return to explore more of this magnificent country.

We traveled across Beijing, Pingyao, Xi'an, Dali, Shangri-La, Chengdu, Zhangjiajie, Guilin, Yangshou, Hangzhou, Huangshan, and Shanghai, covering distances via 4 domestic flights and 6 high-speed trains (in both first and business class). Our accommodations included 15 stays at 4 to 5-star hotels, all perfectly located with spacious, comfortable rooms that made each stop feel like a home away from home.

The highlights were countless: breathtaking scenery that looked as if it had been lifted straight from a painting, remarkable architecture that told stories of millennia of history, rich cultural traditions that came alive at every turn, warm and welcoming people, and incredible food that delighted our palates in every region.

What truly set this trip apart was the exceptional service provided by our travel consultant, Shirley, from Asia Odyssey. She has taken substantial time and effort crafting a flawless itinerary that balanced exploration, comfort, and cultural immersion perfectly. There are also the team of local guides who made our journey unforgettable – each one was knowledgeable, friendly, patient, and went above and beyond to ensure we felt valued and well-cared for. From helping with payments when our digital wallets failed, to bargaining on our behalf, answering every question promptly, and ensuring we never felt lost or overwhelmed, their dedication was remarkable. A special thank you to Tracey (Beijing), Jonathan (Pingyao), Jenny (Xi'an), Selina (Dali), Sophia (Shangri-La) , Sumner (Chengdu), Shy (Zhangjiajie), Lizzie (Guilin/Yangshuo), Sloven (Hangzhou), Sophia 汪(Huangshan) and Mary (Shanghai) – you are the heart of this incredible company.

Our drivers were equally outstanding, always smiling, patient, and attentive to every detail – from opening doors to handling our luggage with care. Throughout the entire trip, we felt like VIPs, with every need anticipated and addressed.

We leave China with thousands of photos and even more precious memories, and we cannot recommend Asia Odyssey highly enough. This is how travel should be – seamless, enriching, and filled with genuine care and expertise. We’ll be back soon to discover even more of China’s wonders!
